Apple–Google AI moves meet the “gigawatt era” of compute

The AI platform race is starting to look less like a features contest and more like a power-and-partnership arms race. Recent reporting frames it this way: Apple and Google are maneuvering around Google’s Gemini, while the industry more broadly is planning “gigawatt-scale” compute infrastructure—the kind of data-center buildout that starts to resemble utilities planning, not just tech roadmaps.

On the platform side, Apple–Google AI moves signal a pragmatic reality: even the biggest consumer ecosystems may lean on external frontier models (or model components) to stay competitive. That raises obvious questions—how deeply AI is integrated into phones and operating systems, what data stays on-device versus in the cloud, and how “default assistants” shape user behavior the way search defaults once did.

But the bigger story may be underneath the software: compute. “Gigawatt-scale” planning implies a world where AI capacity depends on chips, land, cooling, and—most critically—electricity.
